Building Skills for Success: New Student-Led Initiatives Launch at Kilwinning Academy

Friday 1st November 2024 saw the launch of three new Innovative Projects at Kilwinning Academy: KA Cycle Maintenance, Roasters, and KA Nails.

Guests were warmly welcomed with drinks made by pupils working at the Roasters barista station. Deputy Head Teacher Chris Shaw then spoke about the positive impact of these student-led projects. Following his remarks, guests enjoyed engaging presentations delivered directly by the pupils themselves.

KA Roasters – Pupils shared their journey over the past few months, their plans to expand flavours, work towards their National 5 SPA Qualification, and keep up their impressive 100% customer satisfaction.

KA Cycle Maintenance – This group, just a year into their project, described the teamwork, skill-building, and hands-on experience they’ve gained by refurbishing donated bikes as part of their school timetable.

KA Nails – The young entrepreneurs discussed the skills they’ve developed through creating and managing their own beauty business, serving clients, and building a professional portfolio. They shared future goals of opening their own businesses with the knowledge and skills learned.

DYW Ayrshire Ambassador, Walter Smith MBE, spoke on the lasting value of these initiatives and his dedication to supporting youth projects. The event closed with remarks from Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran Sheriff Iona McDonald, congratulating the pupils on their achievements.
