Merck's Curiosity Cube brings synthetic biology to Ayrshire

Pupils across Ayrshire had the opportunity to discover the world of synthetic biology this May as Merck returned with its Curiosity Cube, delivering interactive STEM activities in schools.

The Curiosity Cube is a solar-powered mobile science laboratory designed to bring hands-on learning experiences directly into communities. Travelling across Europe and beyond, the initiative aims to inspire curiosity in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) while encouraging young people to imagine themselves as the scientists of the future.

This year’s programme focused on the theme of synthetic biology, giving pupils the opportunity to explore how biology and technology can work together to solve real-world challenges.

The Cube visited Ardrossan Academy from Tuesday 5th to Wednesday 6th May before returning to Ayr Academy on Thursday 21st May.

During the visits, pupils took part in interactive sessions led by Merck employees from the company’s Ayrshire biopharmaceutical site. Staff shared their own experiences of working in science and guided pupils through engaging activities designed to make STEM subjects accessible, exciting and relevant to everyday life.

The return of the Curiosity Cube highlights Merck’s ongoing commitment to supporting STEM education and inspiring the next generation of scientists across Ayrshire.
