Prestwick Academy Pupils Take On Community Roofing Projects
Prestwick Academy pupils taking part in the Future Roofing Project were recently given the opportunity to put their practical skills into action by working on two local community projects.
Following the official launch of the project last month, pupils were invited to complete a project at Hansel Village, which was selected by the Lord‑Lieutenant of Ayrshire & Arran, Sheriff Iona Sara MacDonald OBE . The innovative programme, supported by funding from DYW Ayrshire, is designed to develop vocational skills within schools while providing pupils with valuable real‑world experience.
The project was led by Andy Kerr, Operations Director at KRB Group (Ayr) Ltd, who mentored pupils as they re‑roofed a wishing well gifted to Hansel Village by Ayr and Prestwick Men’s Shed. Impressed by the pupils’ enthusiasm, commitment and developing skillset, Andy offered them the opportunity to take on a larger and more challenging project.

Rising confidently to the challenge, the students began work at River Gardens, Auchencruive, where they were tasked with rebuilding a dilapidated roof. The building forms part of a local alcohol and drug rehabilitation facility that supports residents in making positive and meaningful changes in their lives.
This second re‑roofing project provided another invaluable learning experience for the pupils, allowing them to further develop their practical abilities under Andy’s expert guidance. To help ensure the long‑term sustainability of the initiative, teachers from Prestwick Academy are also learning the necessary skills to carry the project forward for future pupils.
The Future Roofing Project showcases the impact of hands-on vocational learning, strong community partnerships and meaningful mentorship in developing skills for Ayrshire’s young workforce, while making a positive impact locally. There are hopes to expand the project into more schools in the near future.
