2025 Merck Curiosity Cube

The Curiosity Cube has recently visited Robert Burns Academy in Cumnock, Garnock Community Campus in Beith, and Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School in Kilmarnock.

The mobile science lab is designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) through immersive, hands-on experiments.

Powered by science and technology company Merck, the Curiosity Cube aims to break down barriers to STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists.

Students had the opportunity to work alongside Merck employees from the company’s Ayrshire biopharmaceutical site, which specialises in biosafety testing.

Mauricio Camargo, site director for Merck’s Irvine site, said: “The Curiosity Cube represents a great opportunity to ignite a passion for science in the young minds of our community. This initiative embodies Merck’s vision of fostering curiosity and innovation, inspiring the next generation of scientists and thinkers. When children explore and experiment, they not only learn but also spark an interest in discovery.

During the visit, pupils took part in three interactive experiments focused on the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, including image authenticity, pattern recognition, and self-driving cars.

The activities were designed to help students see how STEM concepts apply to everyday life and develop critical thinking skills for future careers.

The Curiosity Cube is now in its fourth year of touring Europe, with each stop offering students a chance to become scientists for a day through engaging, real-world science experiences.
